I’m not here to influence any of you, or to patronize you. I’m just here to present what’s happenning to you.
I had to research this for my class. When we split up the class to know who was “all for it” and who was “against it”, 96% of the class was “against it”.
Now, the confusion is that everyone makes this into a sexual issue. There’s a difference between sexuality and gender roles. This is not a sexual issue, this a gender role issue. This isn’t about what a 5 year old will grow up to be sexually attracted to; this is about what a society claiming what a norm is.
This is simply a young boy liking to do “boy stuff” in a pink dress.
And I’d like to point out that is where the problem starts, with “boy stuff”.
Who are you to say what is “boy stuff” and/or “girl stuff”. These are all schemas we build by the influences of our parents, our society and by media. And if you don’t think shit is real, go to a goddamn Duane Reade and pick up a “It’s a Boy!” card or a “It’s a Girl!” card. This shit is so subliminally engraved into us that we don’t even know when it’s happening.
I don’t even want to get to in depth with this, because I won’t shut up. But man, all I have to say is that if you’re sitting here judging a 5 year old boy by what he wears you have a lot of self reflecting to do. If you don’t see how much of a progress this is, you have a lot of self reflecting to do.
This is a African American family, accepting their child for who he is, offering their unconditional love and support.
There are adults, till this day living unhappily in a marriage because they’re too scared to come in touch with their sexuality. They are afriad to portray who they truly are.
Here you have a 5 year old who isn’t, and who is okay with the fact that some people won’t like him.
Let’s take this concept and apply to the bigger picture. Do you really believe that when people started dating/marrying outside of their race, society thought it was okay? Do you really believe that when some of the Germans we’re risking their lives to save Jews, society thought it was okay? Do you think that when we had segregation and people were fighting for the civil rights, society thought it was okay?
If you don’t see how revolutionary this is, I’m sorry.
